Connect Beauty: Nontoxic Beauty and Ecochic Fashion

Sasstainable attends the annual ecochic fundraiser in Toronto.

Women’s Healthy Environments Network (WHEN) and Fashion Takes Action (FTA) hosted their annual ecochic fundraiser last Thursday. If you follow Sasstainable on Twitter and Instagram (click to follow!), you may have caught some live photos and tweets throughout the evening. Connect Beauty partnered with some of Toronto’s most chic and sustainable brands and initiatives, from Vespertine to Clean Care, and brought the best of nontoxic beauty together with a runway inspired fashion show. The event was well attended, with special guests modelling the evening’s fashion, including Rebecca Black, of Black Current Marketing and Gill Deacon host of CBC’s Here and Now, among others. Keynote Speaker, Rick Smith, co-author of Toxin Toxout: Getting Harmful Chemicals Out of Our Bodies and Our World, delivered a brief, humour-laden address. He spoke about toxic, carcinogenic chemicals in our lifestyle – our clothing, food and even new cars. Smith’s investigative research is clear: we are surrounded by toxins and small changes, like eating organic produce, can measurably reduce the toxins in our bodies, but widespread, systemic change is needed to protect our health and environment.

Sponsors of the event included Jax Coco coconut water (so tasty!) and Marie Natie cosmetics , who were offering makeovers in partnership with Clean Care. They worked with a trained makeup artist, who usually uses MAC cosmetics, to prove that natural and nontoxic makeup is as effective and beautiful as conventional cosmetics, while also being far healthier and safer. The Clean Care Seal is calling on the beauty and personal care industry to #cuthecrap from our products. Stay tuned for a full feature of Clean Care next week, so you can learn more about this exciting seal for consumer products. Keep scrolling below for a before and after makeover and runway looks.
