Ethical Fashion Show & Greenshowroom Berlin: One year later

Sharing Sasstainable favourites from Berlin Ethical Fashion Show 2013.

One year ago, I had the distinct privilege of attending the Berlin Ethical Fashion Show . It was my chance to meet and greet sustainable brands and designers, before we moved from London back to Toronto. I was a few weeks pregnant, so it was a fun time to get away, stay in a nice hotel with very good breakfast in the mornings, and meet some industry legends like Orsola de Castro. As a former history student, a trip to Berlin was an opportunity to reflect on my studies; the city is steeped in histories, including some of the darkest periods of the twentieth century. On the day I arrived, as I walked to the venue to register, I stumbled on a simple brick line cutting diagonally across the sidewalk in front of me. A symbol of tyranny, but also the unrelenting human desire for freedom and self-expression, the marker in the pavement read simply, “Berlin Wall 1961-1989”. I stopped for a few moments and found myself welling up with emotion (it was the pregnancy hormones, surely…) while I reflected on the significance of the fall of the wall. I was reminded of the necessity of our continued persistence to protect and promote our inherent human rights, and the natural environment on which we depend. That sentiment stayed with me all week, when I met with dozens of designers, brand managers, charity workers, consultants, industry leaders and dreamers, who share with me the resolute belief that we can leave the world a better place than we found it, and live beautiful lives.

Last year, I was pleased to cover Berlin Fashion Week and write articles for Eluxe magazine and Feelgood Style, and I wanted to take the opportunity to feature my favourites again on Sasstainable. I took plenty of photos and I’m excited to share current designs as well.

If you have a chance, please come back on Wednesday for another post featuring this year’s stand out style stars, for the best brands in Berlin. – Angela
