Scotia iTRADE is first online brokerage in Canada to launch sustainable investing for direct investors

This post has been brought to you in partnership with Scotia iTRADE. All thoughts and opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Scotia iTRADE.

Scotia iTRADE now provides access and education on sustainable investing and is first in Canada to launch sustainable investing. Are you a conscious consumer living your life with ethical and sustainable values, with money burning a hole in your pocket ready for investment opportunities? Well, even if you read that sentence and think, like I do, no, I don’t have a pile of money ready to invest, thanks for rubbing it in, hear me out. I have some exciting news for anyone who invests (or plans on investing) and wants to align their investments with their vision for a more fair, sustainable world. This brand new investing suite provides research on individual companies to help generate investment ideas and help us make investment decisions that align with our values. I shout about living a Sasstainable lifestyle all day long – now I have an opportunity to make my investment decisions sustainable too, and put my money where my mouth is.

So, what is sustainable investing, anyway?

It’s an investment discipline that considers environmental, social and corporate governance criteria (ESG) as part of investment portfolio selection and management practices. This includes issue areas many of us care deeply about in our day to day lives, from climate change, water scarcity, Indigenous rights, gender and diversity, employee engagement, corporate philanthropy, board composition and even bribery  and corruption. To put it plainly, ESG information empowers us to put our money where our hearts are, so we can set up our investments to reflect what we truly believe in, to generate long term financial returns and positive societal outcomes. ESG data can help us identify companies that may be better positioned for long-term success, by highlighting both positive and negative indicators, and avoiding controversies like human rights abuses, negative environmental incidents and more. Until now, these ESG informed approaches have been limited to institutional investors, but no longer. Now, investors like you and I can incorporate these considerations into our own investments. I love how the videos on explain sustainable investing.

Scotia iTRADE’s new sustainable investment information is offered through Sustainalytics – an award-winning global responsible investment research firm specialized in ESG research and analysis. The firm offers global perspectives and solutions with local expertise, serving values-based and mainstream investors that integrate ESG information and assessments into investment decisions. Investors will be able to search and access information on market overviews, with the top rated companies across 20 industry groups, including companies rated positively as ESG outperformers and leaders. Hey, sustainable companies, you can sit with us (wink).

Make it easier to invest the way you live. Conscientious.

We change all our lightbulbs. We sip on fair trade coffee in our Joco cups. We take our reusable bags to the store, shop local, go organic and take transit to work. We care about global issues, donating to important causes and advocating for change in our communities. We work hard for our money, but we want to ensure that we invest our hard earned income in a way that reflects these values. It’s easy to think that one person’s investment won’t make much of a difference – what kind of an impact can my money make? – but imagine if millions of Canadians dedicated their investment choices with positive ESG indicators. Scotia iTRADE tools empower us with actionable investing tools and research. I want to put my money where my values are and invest in a better world. I want to prepare for my financial future and support companies doing well by doing good. Have you ever considered sustainable investing? Do you want to learn more about investing in the things you believe in? Visit and start your sustainable investment portfolio, today.
